Heavy overnight rain causes 30 incidents across Madeira

· Updated · Madeira Journal News Desk

Torrential showers overnight into Sunday caused landslides, blocked roads and flooding across Madeira, and the rain gauge at Pico do Areeiro reached red-warning levels while an orange warning was in force.

What happened

The Regional Civil Protection Service counted 30 incidents between 20:00 on Saturday and 07:30 on Sunday, mostly landslides, road clearances and floods, handled by 76 responders. Funchal had 12, Santa Cruz six and Câmara de Lobos four.

IPMA station data up to 08:00 showed 85.3 mm of rain in six hours at Pico do Areeiro, a red-warning level, and 84.7 mm at Chão do Areeiro. The warning in force for the south coast and mountains was orange, from midnight to 09:00.

In São Martinho, Funchal, stones and mud damaged two cars and a motorcycle on Caminho do Pinheiro das Voltas around 06:00, and part of Caminho da Cova do Til subsided. Fallen rocks left one lane open on the Eira do Serrado road near Estrela, and debris was cleared from the Via Expresso at Faial. A rockfall in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos broke two roof tiles, with no injuries.

IFCN is keeping the forest road from Areeiro to Eira do Serrado closed after several landslides. Airport operations were normal at about 10:00, though some planes had to go around on the first landing attempt.

What it means for you

The orange warning ended at 09:00, but IPMA extended yellow rain warnings for Madeira and Porto Santo until 21:00 on Sunday, with showers that can be heavy and thundery. Expect stones and mud on minor roads above Funchal. Related guide: Funchal weather by season: what to expect.

What to do

Civil Protection advises avoiding unnecessary trips, slowing down where water lies on the road and never crossing flooded ground. The harbour office still urges care on harbour walls, cliffs, beaches and natural pools. Before a mountain walk, check the IFCN trail list; it was last updated on 2 October, so it may not reflect last night's rain.
