Arriving at Madeira Airport (FNC): first-hour tips
Madeira’s main airport (IATA code FNC, officially Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport) sits on the south-east coast near Santa Cruz, roughly a 20–30 minute drive from central Funchal in normal traffic. It is small and easy to navigate. The two things most likely to catch you out are the wind and transport late at night.
Before you fly: plan for wind
- FNC is known for gusty crosswinds. Some days, flights circle, try again, or divert, often to Porto Santo, Lisbon, or the Canary Islands, until conditions improve.
- Check your airline’s app and the airport’s official site on travel day, not only the weather.
- Keep your first night flexible. Choose bookings with free cancellation or late check-in, and tell your host you may arrive late.
- Pack medication, a charger, and a change of clothes in your carry-on in case you end up somewhere else overnight.
Getting from the airport to Funchal
- Taxi: taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree on the fare or check that the meter is running before you leave, and ask for a receipt.
- Bus / airport shuttle: public buses connect the airport with Funchal and other towns. Check current routes and last departures at the information desk or the operator’s timetable, especially for late arrivals.
- Ride-hailing: apps may work in Madeira, but pickup rules and availability at the airport change. Have a taxi as your backup.
- Pre-booked transfer: worth it with kids, lots of luggage, or a late landing.
Car hire
- Rental desks are in or near arrivals, and some companies use off-site lots with a shuttle. Read your voucher before you land.
- Madeira roads are steep, winding, and full of tunnels. A car with enough power and an automatic gearbox makes life easier if you are not used to hill starts.
- Photograph the car on all sides before you drive off, and check the fuel and deposit policy.
- Parking in central Funchal is tight. If your first days are city-only, you can pick the car up later.
Get connected
- Portugal is in the EU, so EU mobile plans usually roam at home rates. Check your own plan’s fair-use limits.
- Coming from outside the EU? Set up an eSIM before you fly so maps and messages work as soon as you land. Airport Wi‑Fi is a backup.
Your first evening
- Message your host when you land, not when you reach the door. Mountain roads and tunnels can drop your signal.
- Get cash or check card acceptance if you are heading somewhere rural.
- Buy water and breakfast basics on the way if you arrive late. Small shops close earlier outside Funchal.
- Check tomorrow’s weather by elevation before you plan a levada: see our levada safety tips and Funchal weather by season.
