Madeira Airport (FNC) arrival guide: taxi, bus, and first night
Madeira’s main airport (FNC, Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport) sits near Santa Cruz on the south-east coast. In clear traffic it is roughly a 20–30 minute drive to central Funchal. The terminal is small and easy to walk through; the decisions that matter are how you leave, what time you land, and whether your first night can flex if wind delays the flight.
This guide expands the taxi, bus and first-night pieces. For wind diversions, carry-on packing and a shorter overview, see our FNC first-hour tips. For how locals buffer wind days, see FNC wind delays. Live flight and airport notices always come from the ANA Madeira Airport site—we do not mirror schedules or fares.
After you land: the first 15 minutes
- Follow Arrivals, clear immigration if needed, and collect bags. The walk is short compared with large mainland hubs.
- Check your phone signal before you leave the building. Message your host or hotel with an updated ETA once you know which exit you will use.
- Decide transport before you step outside. Taxi queues, bus stops and rental shuttles are close, but late at night options thin out.
- Have a Plan B if your flight diverted or landed hours late: a flexible first night and a backup taxi number beat hoping the last bus is still running.
Taxi from FNC
- Where: licensed taxis wait outside arrivals. Follow the official taxi signs rather than accepting unsolicited offers inside the terminal.
- Fare practice: ask whether the meter is running, or agree the fare to your destination before the car moves. Ask for a receipt.
- Night and luggage: late landings and large bags still work with taxis more reliably than with the last public bus. Confirm the drop-off address, including floor or gate codes for hillside stays.
- Receipts and cards: card acceptance varies by driver. Carry a small cash buffer as backup; we do not quote a “typical” fare because rates and surcharges change.
- Shared vans / pre-booked transfers: useful with kids, lots of luggage, or a villa far from the centre. Book with a clear cancellation window in case of diversion.
Bus and airport shuttle
- Public buses link the airport area with Funchal and other towns. Routes, last departures and ticket rules change—check the information desk on arrival or the operator’s current timetable, not an old blog post.
- Late flights: assume the last bus may already have gone. Have a taxi or pre-booked transfer as default after roughly late evening (exact cut-offs vary; verify on the day).
- Tickets: buy according to the operator’s current method (on-board, app or machine). Keep the ticket until you exit.
- With big luggage: buses are possible but less comfortable. A taxi or transfer is often worth it on day one.
- Do not invent a schedule from memory. Timetables shift with season and works. Confirm before you rely on a specific departure.
Ride-hailing and car hire (quick notes)
- Ride-hailing apps may work on the island, but airport pickup rules and driver availability change. Treat them as a possible option, not a guarantee—keep taxi as backup.
- Car hire desks are in or near arrivals; some brands use off-site lots with a shuttle. Read the voucher before you land. Photograph the car on all sides before you drive off.
- Madeira roads are steep, with tunnels and sharp bends. If you are tired after a delayed flight, consider a taxi into Funchal and picking the car up the next day.
First night in Funchal (or nearby)
- Book something flexible for night one: free cancellation or late check-in. Tell the host you are flying into FNC and may arrive late.
- Message when you land, not only when you reach the door. Tunnels and hills can drop signal on the way.
- Supplies: if you arrive after small shops close, pick up water and simple breakfast near the airport road or in Funchal centre before you settle in.
- Cash and cards: larger Funchal spots usually take cards; rural or very late stops may not. A little cash helps.
- Next-day plans: check elevation weather before a levada. Start with our Funchal weather by season and levada safety tips, and always confirm open/closed walks on the Visit Madeira notice to walkers.
Connectivity on arrival
- EU mobile plans usually roam in Portugal at home rates within fair-use limits—check your own contract.
- Outside the EU: set up an eSIM before you fly so maps and messages work as soon as you land. Airport Wi‑Fi is a useful backup, not a plan.
- Save offline maps for the airport–Funchal corridor in case data is slow after landing.
