What happened

From Monday the maximum price of IO95 petrol drops by 1.5 cents to €2.020 a litre. Road diesel rises by 2.8 cents to €2.113, and coloured and marked diesel, used mainly in farming and fishing, also rises by 2.8 cents, to €1.665 a litre. Road diesel stays 9.3 cents a litre dearer than petrol.

The regional government cut the tax on petroleum and energy products (ISP) on diesel for the fourth period in a row to soften swings in international prices. Without that cut, regional finance secretary Duarte Freitas said, road diesel would have gone up by 3.4 cents and coloured diesel by 3.1 cents, while petrol would have fallen by 1.9 cents.

What it means for you

A tank of diesel costs a little more next week, petrol a little less. These are maximum prices, so a station may charge less. Madeira stays cheaper than the mainland: next week petrol is 7.9 cents a litre lower and road diesel 6.2 cents lower, both under the 10-cent gap the regional government wants to keep. For coloured and marked diesel the gap is 16 cents. The weekly list is on the fuel prices page. Related guide: Do you need a car in Madeira? Renting, driving, and the no-car option.
