Coworking in Funchal: how to choose the best space for remote work
Funchal has a small but active remote-work scene. You will find dedicated coworking spaces, hotel and hostel lounges that sell day passes, and cafés that tolerate laptops at quiet times. The “best” space depends on your calls, your budget, and where you sleep. This guide shows you how to pick one and check it properly. We do not rank named spaces we have not tested in person, and we do not quote prices or opening hours. Both change, so always confirm them directly with the space.
Still looking for a place to stay? Read our mid-term housing guide alongside this one. Your commute matters as much as the desk.
Where to look in Funchal
- City centre and the old town (Zona Velha): the most walkable choice. You get plenty of cafés for lunch and easy bus links, but more street noise and tourist crowds.
- Lido / hotel zone (west of the centre): popular with longer-stay visitors. Hotel lounges and newer buildings are common, and the seafront promenade is good for walking breaks.
- São Martinho and Ajuda: residential, with many mid-term rentals. Check whether you can walk to your desk or will rely on the bus up and down the hill.
- Outside Funchal (Caniço, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol): some remote workers base themselves along the south coast. Look up transport before committing to a daily commute into the city.
Funchal is steep. A space that looks “10 minutes away” on a map can mean a hard climb home. Check the elevation, not just the distance.
What to test on a trial day
Most spaces offer a day pass or a free trial visit. Use it as a real test, not a tour:
- Run a speed test at your actual desk, not at reception. Check upload as well as download if you do video calls or push large files.
- Make a test call. Book a call room if there is one, or ask where people take calls. Open-plan echo is the most common complaint.
- Count the power sockets near the desks you would use, and check whether you need an adapter. Portugal uses the standard European two-pin plug.
- Sit for a few hours. Chair comfort, air conditioning, and afternoon sun through big windows all matter more on day five than in minute five.
- Check the backup plan. Ask what happens during a power or internet outage. Carry an eSIM or local SIM so you can tether if needed.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What do the day, week, and month passes include? Fixed desk or hot desk?
- What are the opening hours, including weekends and public holidays? Is there 24/7 access for members?
- Are call rooms or meeting rooms included, or booked and paid separately?
- Can you store a monitor, keyboard, or bag overnight?
- Is there a kitchen, filtered water, or coffee included?
- Can you get an invoice in your company name with a tax number? This matters if you expense it.
- What is the cancellation or pause policy if you travel mid-month?
Write the answers down and compare at least two spaces. Do not rely on old reviews or blog lists, including ours.
Coworking vs café days
Cafés are fine for email and focused writing. They are a poor choice for long calls or full workdays. If you do work from cafés, buy something every couple of hours, avoid peak lunch tables, and keep calls short and quiet. Many remote workers mix a part-time coworking pass with café mornings and lighter days.
Plan around weather and transport
- Rainy or windy days make walking up Funchal's hills less pleasant. Check the IPMA Funchal forecast the night before and decide whether to go in or work from home.
- Weather warnings from IPMA can affect buses and outdoor plans. A flexible pass helps on those days.
- Weekend hikes: if you plan to finish work early for a mountain walk, check the Visit Madeira notice to walkers for open and closed routes first.
